There is a great contrast among the characters. Primrose is 20 years old, a sort of energetic, angry, quick, clever, modern, bold, uncomprehending, neglected, young child, revolting against all the well-known customs. She is very bumpy, rough, and tough to her aunt. Rude Primrose is a smoke-screen of a loving and intelligent daughter. Whereas Lucy is 40 years old, a realistic, ready, hardworking, daring, dashing, self-made, pitiable, admirable, thoughtful, philosophical, liberal, and loving mother knows the new generation. Lucy is a smoke-screen of a kind mother. Lucy’s husband is a smoke-screen of a bad man and ugly John is a smoke-screen of a nice man. The title of the play is well justified through all the characters who use their outward face as a “Smoke Screen” to hide their inner nature.

Thus we conclude, the theme of the play is “Better an ugly face than an ugly mind.”

English One Act Plays Smoke screens Short Questions & Answers

Ans:-

In this play, Susan, Lucy, and Primrose seem to be happy but inside them, there is a lurking tension. They are smokescreens. Susan considers that marriage gives a sense of respect and security to women. Lucy considers love and beauty as a qualification for marriage. Primrose has been brought up on the thought that all men are rotters. She thinks widely and wisely that the splendor of character, cultivated mind, and mutual love are the secrets of good married life. So, unlike Lucy, she selects an ugly John.

Lucy is 40 years old, realistic, ready, hardworking, daring, dashing, self-made, pitiable. an admirable, thoughtful, philosophical, liberal, and loving mother knows the new generation. She thinks that she makes a mistake to marry a person based on his physical charm, and due to this, she meets an unsatisfactory and unhappy life of a widow. After her separation from her husband, she sets up her own business. After fifteen years of hard labor, she owns three garages and a large number of Taxicabs. She is greatly shocked by the decision of her daughter. At first, she feels severe anxiety and tries to resist her but later on, she becomes ready to see John, the future husband of her daughter. She remarks with pain, “It is a losing game to be a mother”. Lucy is a smoke-screen of a kind mother. She is a type rather than an individual.

Primrose is 20 years old, a sort of energetic, angry, quick, clever, modern, bold, uncomprehending, a neglected young child, revolting against all the well-known customs. She is taking revenge on her mother, her society, her father, and herself. So she is living a two-faced life. Her decision is very notable “If I’m making a mistake it’s a different mistake from the one you made”. Rude Primrose is a smoke-screen of a loving and intelligent daughter. She, too, is a type rather than an individual.

Susan is 50 years old, experienced, conservative, and representative of the old Victorian morality. She is quite ready to advise her niece about morality. She expects civility from the new generation. But she is also a two-faced woman i.e., she tells Primrose about her headache whereas she does not have any headache at all. So she is a smoke-screen of immorality. Susan too is a type rather than an individual.

Thus we conclude the theme of the play is “Better an ugly face than an ugly mind”.
