Departure & Arrival by T. S. Eliot

Departure and Arrival Poem Text | Departure and Arrival Poem Words | Content | Verses

Standing upon the shore of all we know

We linger for a moment doubtfully,

Then with a song upon our lips, sail we

Across the harbor bar no chart to show

No light to warn of rocks which lie below,

But let us yet put forth courageously.

Although the path be tortuous and slow,

Although it bristles with a thousand fears,

To the hopeful eye of youth, it still appears

A lane by which the rose and hawthorn grow

We hope it may be, would that we might know;

Would we might look into future years.

Great duties call the twentieth century

More grandly dowered than those which came before,

Summons, who knows what time may hold in store,

Or what great deed the distant years may see,

What conquest over pain and misery,

What heroes greater than were ever of yore.

But if this century is to be more great

Than those before, her sons must make her so

And we are her sons, we must go

With eager hearts to help mould well her fate,

And see that she shall gain such proud estate

And shall on future centuries bestow.

A legacy of benefits may we look into future years,

May we do good until we die,

And ask no other question than to know

That they have helped the cause to victory,

That with their aid the flag is raised on high.

Sometime in distant years when we are grown

Gray-haired and old, whatever be our lot,

We shall desire to see again the spot

Which, whatsoever we have been or done

Or to what distant lands we may have gone,

Through all the years will never have been forgotten.

The poet compares life to a voyage. A man hesitates to plunge into the sea of life, with his limited knowledge. However, he overcomes this fear after some time and starts his journey. He has no map of the sea of life to guide him. There is no light to make him aware of the dangers lying ahead of him. But he still marches on the sea of life and knowledge courageously. Virgil says, “Fortune favors the bold.”

Departure and Arrival Poem Summary, Theme & Critical Appreciation

Multi-Answer For All The Above Questions

Note: You can write this answer for any question related to the poem Departure and Arrival!

The poem is optimistic and suggests the people, “Boldness, and again boldness, and always boldness!” and “To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour.” According to Eliot, it is our moral duty to leave the world / 20th century better than we had received from our forefathers.

In this poem, the poet is an idealist. Eliot’s idealism and commitment are not imaginative but based on reality. He believes in a bright future. He thinks that if man works, he can bring greatness and richness to his nation. For this, the poet stresses the need for a zealous idea in life.

Wordsworth says that “Poetry is a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling”. But Eliot’s “Departure and Arrival” appeals more to our mind than emotions. So I do not find the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings in Eliot’s poem. The poem gives us the message of working selflessly for the betterment of the 20th century.

The poem also gives us a message that lets your courage rise with danger. From today and this place, there begins a new era in the history of the world.

“Fortune favors the bold.”
