Lights Out by Edward Thomas

Lights Out Poem Text | Lights Out Poem Words | Content | Verses

I have come to the borders of sleep,

The unfathomable deep

Forest where all must lose

Their way, however straight,

Or winding, soon or late;

They cannot choose.

Many a road and track

That, since the dawn’s first crack,

Up to the forest brink,

Deceived the travellers,

Suddenly now blurs,

And in the sink.

Here love ends,

Despair, ambition ends;

All pleasure and all trouble,

Although most sweet or bitter,

Here ends in sleep that is sweeter

Then tasks most noble.

There is not any book

Or face of dearest look

That I would not turn from now

To go into the unknown

I must enter, and leave, alone,

I know not how.

The tall forest towers;

Its cloudy foliage lowers

Ahead, shelf above shelf;

Its silence I hear and obey

That I may lose my way

And myself.

Lights Out Poem Explanation Line by Line | Lights Out Poem Explanation With Quotes

  • I have come to the borders of sleep,
  • The unfathomable deep
  • Forest where all must lose
  • Their way, however straight
  • Or winding, soon or late;
  • They cannot choose.

Lines 1-6

The poet also feels sleepy. He is entering into the deep dark forest of sleep where all lose their way whether straight or crooked, sooner or later. Man has no control over it.

  • Many a road track
  • That, since the dawn’s first crack,
  • Up to the forest brink,
  • Deceived the travelers.
  • Suddenly now blurs,
  • And in the sink.

Lines 7-12

Here the poet symbolizes sleep with death. Sleep as well as death has alluring power in it. Life is a travel from sunrise to sunset. All travelers seem confident to live a long life. But blind nature deceives them and encloses them in its dark wings.

  • Here love ends,
  • Despair, ambition ends;
  • All pleasure and all trouble,
  • Although most sweet or bitter,
  • Here ends in sleep that is sweeter
  • Then tasks most noble.

Lines 13-18

At this place, love, despair, and aims finish. All pleasures and troubles whether they are sweet or bitter end in sleep. Sleep is sweeter than the noblest of deeds.

  • There is not any book
  • Or face of dearest look
  • That I would not turn from now
  • To go into the unknown
  • I must enter, and leave, alone.
  • I know not how.

Lines 19-24

No interesting book, no beautiful face can keep a man away from sleep. And no one can mention the philosophy of sleep. The poet wants to say that “Laugh and the world laughs with you; snore and you sleep alone.”

  • The tall forest towers;
  • Its cloudy foliage lowers
  • Ahead, shelf above shelf;
  • Its silence I hear and obey
  • That I may lose my way
  • And myself.

Line 25-30

Now the tall trees of the forest of sleep have become darker. Layers of black sweet shadows of sleep are falling on the poet. The poet is losing his senses. He must obey sleep.

Comments:

The poem tells us that our life is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.
