8. ONE ART by Elizabeth Bishop

One Art Poem Text | One Art Poem Words | Content | Verses

The art of losing isn’t hard to master;

so many things seem filled with the intent

to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster

of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.

The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:

places, and names, and where it was you meant

to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or

next-to-last, of three loved houses went.

The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,

some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.

I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster.

Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture

I love) I shan’t have lied. It’s evident

the art of losing’s not too hard to master

though it may look like a disaster.

Elizabeth Bishop usually tries to look into herself and analyze her feelings. In this poem, she recommends and reflects the painful experiences of her life in a very sweet, neat, light, polite, philosophical but humorous, satiric, and ironic way. She says that life is the name of losses and pains so we must be masters in acceptance.

Actually the statement “The art of losing isn’t hard to master” is an ironic one. When we start practicing the art, then we come to know that it is perhaps the most difficult part to be learned. We can master this art by regular practice only. We should not feel tense at the loss of door keys and time, names, places, people, directions, travels, watches, houses, and cities. Then we shall be able to lose lover like dearest and costly things.

The tone and the attitude of the poetess are mocking and non-serious but the underlying message is serious and sensible. One Art Poem Summary in Urdu
