When I Have Fears by John Keats

When I Have Fears Poem Text | When I Have Fears Poem Words | Content | Verses

 When I have fears that I may cease to be

   Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain,

Before high-pilèd books, in charactery,

   Hold like rich garners the full ripened grain;

When I behold, upon the night’s starred face,

   Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,

And think that I may never live to trace

   Their shadows with the magic hand of chance;

And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,

   That I shall never look upon thee more,

Never have relish in the faery power

   Of unreflecting love—then on the shore

Of the wide world I stand alone, and think

Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.

  • When I have fears that I may cease to be
  • Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain,
  • Before high-piled books, in character
  • Hold like rich garners the full ripened grain;

Lines 1-4

The poet wants to store his poetic ideas in his books. This heap of books would be as precious as bags of grain in the storehouse. But he is afraid that death will carry him away.

  • When I behold, upon the night s’ starred face,
  • Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
  • And think that I may never live to trace
  • Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance,

Line 5-8

Symbolic clouds and star-lit-nights suggest to his mind many love-stories. He aims at interpreting them. But he is afraid that death will carry him away.

  • And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,
  • That I shall never look upon thee more,
  • Never have relish in the faery power
  • Of unreflecting love! O then, on the shore
  • Of the wide world, I stand alone and think
  • Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink.

Lines 9-14

The poet thinks that he will be deprived of the sight of his beloved and also the enjoyment of his one-sided love. He says that he is like a person who is standing on the edge of this vast world and is waiting for death. His love and fame will also sink into death with him. The lesson, then, of the poem is that beauty, love, and fame are all of temporary value in this world. Nothing is constant or permanent. These facts make the poet hopeless and make him feel helpless before his fate.

Comments:

The poem is remarkable for Keats’s sense of beauty in words and sounds, his vivid imagination, and a rich explanatory power.

When I Have Fears Poem Reference to the Context with Explanation

Reference:

These lines have been taken from the poem “When I Have Fears” written by John Keats.

Context:

“Fear has many eyes and can see things underground”. The fearful poet also sees his five fears under the shade of fear. He is afraid that he may die before writing whatever he has in his mind, before large numbers of books hold his ripe mental philosophy, before he expresses his romantic ideas, before he enjoys the face of his beloved and the faery power of unreflecting love”. In this fear, he feels that love and fame are unimportant things for a dying person.

Explanation:

Note: The lines in brackets could be added to the beginning of the explanation of every stanza.

(In these realistic and pathetic lines Keats touches the climax of imaginations. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. A man who fears “suffering” is already suffering from what he fears. The poet does not want to achieve immortality through his work….he wants to achieve it through not dying. It is nothing to die; it is frightful not to live.)
